Principle of Building Learning Objects for

Open and Distance Learning

Some considerations

In a broaden sense Learning objects (LOs) can be defined as "are small electronic units of educational information that are flexible, reusable, customizable, interoperable, retrievable, facilitate competency-based learning, and increase the value of content." www.uwex.edu/ics/design/glossary.htm

There are the instructional learning objects which are mainly used to introduce content, transmit information and facts. These usually take the shape of static websites, powerpoint presentations, pdfs, etc.

However, the innovation of learning objects is in the design of learning objects which aim at a constructivist, learner centered, user-generated content. The design of such objects is more complex and is based on an ongoing learning process. Constructivist learning objects focus on collaboration and personalization of learning. They are also developed around a given context and foster active participation and interaction with its target audience: the learners. Constructivist learning objects are developed not only to support learning, but especially to reinforce the process of learning.
