The future today
What challenges are we addressing?
Basically, learning and teaching online shouldn’t be that different from learning and teaching on-site. The students of today don’t resemble those of a century ago; however our school system still does, in many ways.
The challenge for education in general is to connect the classroom experience with the 21st Century reality. The digital Era, in which we live in, has clearly a direct relation with the use of technology and of the web. They are an important part of today’s society.
Our educational system is still quite instructivist and teacher centered. Students go to school to learn from one (teacher), not to learn with many (in direct inter-relation with the surrounding environment and people). Such conservative school scenario makes education be regarded in a rather artificial, disconnected from the real world environment.
That is where and how the use of online strategies can innovate teaching and learning practices. It can add a more contextualized and up-dated meaning to it. In that sense, the web can work to the learners’ and the moderators’ advantage as a very helpful educational tool (not a substitute though!). When well used and efficiently applied to
meet the learning purposes, learning technologies can be very powerful.
It is all a matter of vision and creativity!
